CLUB HISTORY

Although the Miramar Rangers Soccer Club was founded in 1907, it wasn't until the 1920s that the Club slowly built up membership. In 1930 the Club won the Wellington third grade competition to enter the Second Division. The Club remained in the second tier of Wellington competition up to the war years.

Following the 2nd World War the Club slowly built up considerable strength and by the mid 1950s it had become a force to be reckoned with in Wellington Soccer. Miramar finally won promotion to the Wellington 1st Division in 1954 followed by the winning of the then Wellington post-season Petone-Hilton Cup competition in 1955. Alec Juner, previously with Railways, became Miramar's first international in 1957.

Miramar won the Chatham Cup in 1966 defeating Western 1-0 and became a foundation member of the Central Regional League First Division in 1968. After being the bridesmaid so often during the 1970's, Miramar finally won the Central League First Division in 1980 thus gaining entry to the National League. Miramar won the Chatham Cup for the second time defeating Waikato United 3-1 in 1992.

Miramar  dominated the National League Club competition in New Zealand in it's last three seasons, finishing runner up to Central in the 2001 final, before winning the National League in both 2002 and 2003. Highest placing in the National League prior to this had been as runners up in both 1986 & 1991 and losing Grand Finalist in the initial Summer National League in 1966. Miramar continued its dominance in 2004, winning the local Federation League as well as the Chatham Cup for the third time

Miramar is firmly established as one of the top Clubs in New Zealand with an outstanding record in all facets of the game. Prior to the demise of the Club based National League, Miramar had a twentythree year consecutive run as a member of New Zealand's highest League. This  run was unequalled by any  other National League Club.
Miramar is now a member of the Team Wellington concept.

In 1987 the Club established its sand carpet ground at Centennial Park, Miramar giving it one of the finest playing surfaces in New Zealand and the only all year round soccer ground in Wellington.

Over the years a number of quality players with English Premier Division experience have graced the Club colours. These have included Peter Mendham, John Fashanu, Phil Alexander, Darren Lush and Matthew Holmes. A star attraction in the 1997 season was the appearance of the late Justin Fashanu, one of the highest profile soccer players ever to play in New Zealand. Justin's brother, John, had previously played for Miramar in 1982.

The Club is now looking forward to it's Centenary celebrations next year at Easter 2007. Already a lot of interest is being expressed by former Club members from around the world, in attending the celebrations.
